HAZWOPER 40 Hour Course

Course Name

HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response – 40 hour Course

Description

The Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) 40-Hour Training Course is developed in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120. This course is designed to provide workers, supervisors, and other personnel involved in hazardous waste operations and emergency response activities with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform their duties safely and in compliance with federal regulations.

The HAZWOPER standard was established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to protect employees engaged in operations involving hazardous substances, including uncontrolled hazardous waste sites, RCRA-regulated treatment, storage, and disposal facilities, and emergency response actions for hazardous substance releases. Exposure to chemical, physical, biological, and radiological hazards presents significant risks, and effective training is a critical component of worker protection.

During this 40-hour course, participants will receive comprehensive instruction, including at a minimum hazard recognition, chemical properties, toxicology fundamentals, personal protective equipment (PPE), air monitoring, decontamination procedures, site control, emergency response principles, infectious diseases and bloodborne pathogens, and regulatory requirements. Emphasis is placed on practical application, situational awareness, and adherence to established safety protocols. The course is designed to rely heavily on communication skills. Interactive games and group exercises are implemented in the training to provide the class participants with the ability to work together as a team. Sarros Environmental can also tailor the training for a group of employees to incorporate specific elements or an emphasis on your company’s industry requirements.

Successful completion of this course satisfies the initial training requirement for general site workers under 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(3)(i) and prepares participants to work safely under supervision at hazardous waste sites. This training does not replace site-specific instruction but serves as a foundation for ongoing safety awareness and compliance in hazardous environments.

Learning Objectives

The primary objective of this course is to provide you with a full understanding of hazardous materials and the management of hazardous waste, including emergency response for incidents where hazardous materials are involved.

Upon successful completion of the HAZWOPER 40-Hour Initial Training Course, participants will be able to:

  1. Analyze a hazardous material incident to determine the magnitude of the problem in terms of outcome.
  2. Recognize and evaluate hazardous substances and site-specific hazards commonly encountered during hazardous waste operations, hazardous waste sites, regulated facilities, and emergency response activities.
  3. Explain the purpose, scope, and key requirements of 29 CFR 1910.120, including employee and employer responsibilities, shared contractor sites, and responsibilities.
  4. Recognize routes of exposure and basic toxicological principles related to chemical, physical, biological, and radiological hazards.
  5. Plan a response within the capabilities of available personnel, according to their approved Level of Response.
  6. Select, use, and understand the limitations of personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection and chemical-protective clothing.
  7. Demonstrate understanding of air monitoring and sampling techniques, including interpretation of monitoring results and appropriate response actions.
  8. Describe and apply effective site (contamination) control measures, decontamination, and emergency procedures, including work zones, to prevent the spread of contamination and protect workers and the public.
  9. Identify emergency response actions and reporting procedures appropriate to hazardous substance incidents.
  10. Demonstrate safe work practices consistent with health and safety plans and regulatory requirements.
  11. Implement the planned response to favorably change the outcome consistent with the organization’s standard operating procedure and/or site safety plan.

At the conclusion of this training, participants are expected to demonstrate competency by:

  1. Recognizing hazardous conditions and understanding when to stop work or seek supervisory guidance.
  2. Reviewing and following established Health and Safety Plans (HASP), standard operating procedures, and site-specific rules.
  3. Properly donning, using, and doffing assigned PPE and recognizing conditions requiring changes in protection levels.
  4. Communicating hazards, unsafe conditions, and incidents promptly and effectively.
  5. Performing assigned job tasks under supervision in a manner that minimizes risk to themselves, coworkers, and the environment.
