The Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) 8-Hour Refresher Training Course is conducted in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.120. This course is intended for employees who have previously completed the required 24-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER initial training and who are required to maintain their qualifications through annual refresher instruction.

The purpose of the 8-hour refresher is to reinforce and update essential knowledge and skills necessary for safe work at hazardous waste sites and during emergency response activities involving hazardous substances. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires annual refresher training to ensure that workers remain familiar with current safety practices, regulatory requirements, and evolving hazards that may be encountered in the field.

This course reviews key topics including hazard recognition, chemical properties, toxicology basics, personal protective equipment (PPE), air monitoring, site control, decontamination procedures, emergency response principles, and changes to applicable regulations or industry best practices. Emphasis is placed on lessons learned, recent incidents, and site-specific hazards relevant to participants’ job functions.

Successful completion of this course satisfies the annual refresher training requirement under 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(8). This training supports continued compliance and reinforces the responsibility of both employers and employees to maintain a safe and healthful working environment when managing or responding to hazardous materials.
